Kovan: Pet Health ("Kovan", "we", "us") is a mobile application that helps pet owners manage veterinary health records using AI-powered document scanning. Your privacy matters to us.

1. What we collect

• Account information — email address, name, and authentication credentials (or Apple/Google identity tokens for social sign-in)
• Pet profiles — name, species, breed, date of birth, weight, microchip number
• Veterinary documents — photos of vet records you upload for AI analysis
• Health data — vaccinations, lab results, visit records, treatment plans, and weight entries extracted from your documents
• Device information — push notification tokens, device type, app version
• Usage data — anonymous analytics to improve the app experience

2. How we use your data

• Provide and maintain the Kovan app and its features
• Process veterinary documents using AI (OpenAI API) to extract health records
• Send push notifications about vaccination reminders, treatment schedules, and health insights
• Generate your pet's emergency QR page accessible to anyone who scans the code
• Improve our AI parsing accuracy and app experience

3. AI document processing

When you upload a veterinary document, we send the image to the OpenAI API for analysis. The AI extracts structured health data (vaccinations, diagnoses, lab values) which is stored in your account. OpenAI does not use API data to train their models. Document images are stored on EU-based servers (Hetzner, Germany).

4. Data storage and location

• Database — hosted on EU servers (Hetzner, Germany)
• Document storage — Hetzner Object Storage, EU (Germany)
• AI processing — OpenAI API (data sent to OpenAI servers for processing, not retained for training)
• Analytics — PostHog EU Cloud (Frankfurt, Germany)
• Subscriptions — managed by RevenueCat; purchase data processed by Apple/Google

5. Emergency QR page

Each pet has a unique QR code that links to a public emergency page. This page displays your pet's name, species, breed, age, vaccination status, allergies, and your contact information. Anyone who scans the QR code can view this page without authentication. You can disable this feature in your pet's settings.

6. Data sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We share data only with:

• OpenAI — document images for AI processing
• Apple / Google — for in-app purchase processing and social authentication
• RevenueCat — subscription management
• Hetzner — infrastructure hosting (data processor)

7. Your rights (GDPR)

Under EU data protection law, you have the right to:

• Access — request a copy of all your data
• Rectification — correct inaccurate data via the app
• Erasure — delete your account and all associated data from within the app (More → Delete account)
• Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
• Object — opt out of analytics tracking
• Restrict processing — request limitation of data processing

Account deletion is permanent and immediate. All pets, documents, health records, and personal data are removed from our servers.

8. Data retention

• Active accounts — data retained while your account exists
• Deleted accounts — all data permanently deleted immediately

9. Children

Kovan is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

10. Push notifications

We send notifications for vaccination reminders, treatment schedules, health insights, and QR scan alerts. You can manage notification preferences in the app or disable them entirely in your device settings.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via the app or email.
